Christmas in July Stocking Tag

It may be sweltering hot outside.....but here at POP, we've got Christmas on the mind! Everyone knows it's never too early to start prepping for the holidays so why not start with making a few fun, new stocking tags!

Supplies Needed

Let’s Make It!

  • Hoop one sheet of cut-away stabilizer. Run Step 1, the placement stitch. This will show you where to place your vinyl.
  • Lay your vinyl on top of your hoop covering the placement stitches. Be sure you have about an inch around the perimeter of the design outline so you have plenty of space for trimming later! Secure your vinyl with tape.
  • Run Step 2. This will tack down the vinyl to the stabilizer and is also the placement lines for the applique portion of the stocking tag.
  • Apply Heat n Bond Lite to the back of the fabric for the applique. Lay the applique fabric piece over placement lines from step 2.
  • Run step 3. This will tack down the applique fabric to the vinyl. Trim carefully around the perimeter of the applique fabric piece.
  • Before running step 4, skip to and run the step you added (usually the last step if you added the name in embroidery software) containing any desired text to the stocking tag.
  • Run steps 4 and 5. This will run the satin stitching around the perimeter of your fabric applique piece, as well as a decorative bean stitch on top of the satin stitching.
  • Run step 6. This will stitch a small circle that will be your guide to hole punching when the design is removed from the hoop.
  • Cover the BACK of the design with felt or vinyl right side UP (facing you), and secure it with tape on the perimeter.

*Helpful Tip: Tape a piece of tear-away stabilizer over the vinyl on the back of the hoop. This will help prevent the vinyl from sticking to the bed of your machine.*

  • Run step 7 to attach the vinyl on the back of your design to the front. When complete, the back of your hoop will look like the picture below.

  • Remove from the hoop and trim around the perimeter of your new stocking tag.

  • Finish up by punching a hole and setting an eyelet with a tool such as the “We R Memory Keepers Crop-A-Dile for Eyelets. Add a coordinating piece of ribbon or a cable ring and you're done!

Stocking tags are a great way to add a special touch to a stocking, but they can also be used for other purposes too. They definitely make great gift tags or bookmarks and we can't wait to see what else the POP community comes up with! Be sure to share your finished products with us over on the Parker on the Porch Facebook Group. Happy stitching!
